The Collective Soul Experience
Collective Soul was a 3 day course with Paulette Rees-Denis founder of Gypsy Caravan. I found the whole experience a total joy - a dancing highlight of 2007.
Following introductions and conversations about our bellydance experiences and values we began with tribal technique, drilling and practice. The second day we studied rhythms , drum beats, and zill patterns. We attempted to dance while playing the zills, a skill rarely found in the UK it seems.
On the third day we were introduced to other members of Gypsy Caravan and were lucky enough to dance to live music.
As the group was small we received personal tuition throughout. Such an intense dance experience can often bring various emotions to the surface and this was no exception, Paulette was extremely patient and understanding while continuing to encourage and push everyone to their full potential. Paulette, Gina, Jen and the band blew me away with an inspirational performance which gave us a taste of the possibilities for tribal bellydance. None of us had forgotten the course ended with a ‘test’ or ‘ assessment’ as we preferred to call it in which Paulette was keen to retain the high Gypsy Caravan - Collective Soul standard.
Most workshops provide you with technique and experience but rarely do you and one that truly unites a group of dancers from far and wide in such a positive way. Paulette emphasized the importance of integrity as a dancer and respect for fellow dancers, something we could all benefit from. I would recommend Collective Soul to anyone who is prepared to be challenged in a
supportive atmosphere.

COLLECTIVE SOUL in Portland and On The Road
This intensive program combines dance workouts, various styles of stretches, and toning and strengthening drills with several hours of tribal bellydance practice.
Collective Soul Level One-Beginning Levels One and Two
What we will cover?
Coming together to study the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Technique, we will:
- Improve your technique with Level One and Two moves
- Learn new steps and refine the moves you already know
- Build your confidence as a dancer, leading and following
- Strengthen your improvisational skills
- Learn rhythm identification and different zil patterns, and dance with them!
- Participate in discussions about tribal bellydance history, artistry, and integrity.
- Have a great time dancing together as a circle of women, feeling the community spirit of this dance!
- You will be tested at the end of the session, and if you pass, you will be certified in Gypsy Caravan's Level One Collective Soul Tribal Bellydance Movement and Certification program! In the event you do not pass at this time, you can be re-tested at a later date. No worries, it is an intensive program and some of us need longer for additional study.
- This is a pre-requisite for the Gypsy Caravan Teacher Training program and will allow you to move into Collective Soul Level Two.
*For certified dancers and teachers, you may join any Collective Soul in your level for a nominal fee. It is a great opportunity for you to review with us!
This program has been in demand for years and we are very excited about offering it, so dancers can have a chance to learn by an intensive method, in a wonderful and fun environment, and with personal attention.
This is a way to have formal recognition for your hard work and dedication in learning this unique and versatile style of dance. This will give you the tools you need to better your dance, with knowledge and body skills.
Dancers must have some tribal bellydance experience and will need to fill out an application to be accepted. You must be familiar with the Gypsy Caravan format and style. Studying the Gypsy Caravan technique DVDs is mandatory. Please note that not everyone will pass the first time through this course. Some dancers need extra time to practice, so that not only do they understand the dance moves, but that they understand how to use their body and can communicate the moves. We honor each dancer with their own learning timetable; you can have the opportunity to be retested when you feel ready by an agreed upon method and fee.

Collective Soul Level Two-Intermediate One,
approximately fifteen hours including testing

for Intermediate Level One,
We move into the Intermediate Level One session, work on smoother transitions between moves, refinement of personal style, and variations of tribal styling. This is a three-day intensive, five hours each day, including testing.
* Improve your technique with Level One and Two moves
* Add new dance steps to your repertoire, review and refine the moves you know
* Discuss interpretation and understanding the nuances of music
* Continue work on smooth transitions between steps
* Build your confidence as a dancer, leading and following
* Strengthen your improvisational skills
* Add more zil patterns, and dance with them!
* Review rhythm identification
* Add simple formations to your dance
* Participate in discussions about tribal bellydance artistry.
* Have a great time dancing together as a circle of women, feeling the community spirit of this dance!
* You will be tested at the end of the session, and if you pass, you will be certified in Gypsy Caravan's Level Two Collective Soul Tribal Bellydance Movement and Certification program! In the event you do not pass at this time, you can be re-tested at a later date. No worries, it is an intensive program and some of us need longer for additional study.
* This is your pre-requisite for Gypsy Caravan Teacher Training Stage Two, and will also allow you to move into Collective Soul Level Three, for Intermediate Level Two.

- Dance with variety of zil patterns
- Review rhythm identification
- Participate in discussions about tribal bellydance artistry.
- Have a great time dancing together as a circle of women, feeling the community spirit of this dance!
You will be tested at the end of the session, and if you pass, you will be certified in Gypsy Caravan's Level Three Collective Soul Tribal Bellydance Movement and Certification program! In the event you do not pass at this time, you can be re-tested at a later date. No worries, it is an intensive program and some of us need longer for additional study. - This is your pre-requisite for Gypsy Caravan Teacher Training Level Three, and will also allow you to move into Collective Soul Level Four, for Advanced Level One.
Dance tuition for the program: $550.00 at Paulette's, On The Road may be more depending on how many dancers.
Deposit of non-refundable $100.00 with this application to Paulette.

Collective Soul Level Six-Performance Preparatory.
Teacher Training will follow the course levels if you have passed Collective Soul Level One, you may qualify (if you meet all of the Pre-requisites) for Teacher Training Level One, and so on. The levels are logically sequential to make you the best dancer you can be—our ultimate goal! (The levels do not necessarily follow the identical sequence of the Tribal Technique DVD series. Participating in Gypsy Caravan workshops does not qualify you to be certified.)
